Low-cost carrier Wizz Air will cancel its Skopje-Budapest service starting March 9, the airline told MIA on Thursday.
Wizz Air said the decision follows routine performance reviews aimed at maintaining competitive prices on popular routes.
“It is a regular practice for Wizz Air to optimize its routes based on performance. Wizz Air remains committed to enhancing its services and exploring new growth opportunities in Central and Eastern Europe. All affected passengers have been notified and offered alternative flights or a full refund in the form of payment or Wizz credit,” the company said.
The Ministry of Transport confirmed that the Skopje-Budapest route had not received government subsidies.
“The ministry’s policy is to develop air traffic, which aligns with our strategy that has resulted in ten new routes in just six months. We expect further sector development, improved service quality, and the promotion of Macedonia as an attractive tourist destination,” the Ministry said.
Despite the cancellation, Wizz Air will launch new subsidized routes from Skopje to Lyon, Barcelona, and Stuttgart starting June 30.
