At least one person was killed and several others injured after a tram derailed in central Sarajevo on Wednesday, authorities said.
The incident occurred near the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Centar municipality around midday, involving a tram traveling from the railway station to the Skenderija district. The front section of the tram and most of the nearby tram station were destroyed, local media reported.
A 14-year-old girl suffered severe injuries in the accident, including the amputation of a leg, according to Sarajevo media. Two other passengers sustained serious injuries and were transported to the Clinical Center of Sarajevo for treatment.
“The emergency teams on site treated three patients. One was transported with head and leg injuries to the Clinical Center, while two others were also admitted for further care,” Dr. Riada Blažević from the Sarajevo Canton Emergency Medical Service said. Another patient had been moved to the General Hospital by health staff already at the scene, and one person died at the site.
Police cordoned off the area, and the main road has been closed with traffic rerouted to alternate routes. An investigation is underway, led by the on-duty prosecutor and supported by mechanical and traffic safety experts, authorities said.
No official cause for the derailment has yet been released by the Sarajevo Canton Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Emergency services continue to secure the area, while authorities work to determine the circumstances of the accident.
