Two earthquakes struck Greece within hours on Friday morning, with the stronger registering magnitude 4.3 near the island of Skiathos, according to seismic data cited by Greek and regional media.
The first earthquake occurred at around 6:40 a.m., with its epicentre about 25 km (16 miles) from Skiathos, according to data attributed to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
It was recorded at a depth of around 10 km.
Residents reporting their experiences to the EMSC described buildings shaking and beds swaying, although the tremor was relatively brief.
A second earthquake followed at 9:42 a.m., registering magnitude 4.2.
Its epicentre was in the sea around five kilometres east of Vasilika, in the northern part of the island of Evia, according to information cited from Greek media.
Greece’s Geodynamic Institute initially estimated the second earthquake’s focal depth at around 16.8 km.
The shaking was also reported to have been felt by some residents in the Attica region, which includes Athens.
There were no immediate reports in the supplied material of casualties or significant damage following either earthquake.
Greece lies in one of Europe’s most seismically active regions and experiences earthquakes frequently.
