Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Saturday that Turkey has discovered a new natural gas reserve of 75 billion cubic meters (bcm) in the Black Sea, marking another step in the country’s push for energy independence.
“We have discovered a new natural gas reserve of 75 billion cubic meters. This volume alone could meet residential demand for approximately three and a half years,” Erdoğan said during the opening ceremony of the Istanbul Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Training and Research Hospital.
He said the discovery was made at the Goktepe-3 well, drilled by the Abdulhamid Han, Turkey’s seventh-generation drilling ship, which began operations at the site on March 27. Drilling was completed as of Friday, Erdoğan added.
Reaffirming his government’s energy goals, Erdoğan said: “We will continue our path without pause, undeterred by criticism or obstacles, until we achieve a fully energy-independent Türkiye.”
