U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday announced he will nominate Mark Brnovich, a former Arizona Attorney General and Army National Guard veteran, as the next United States Ambassador to Serbia.
Brnovich, the son of Montenegrin immigrants who fled communist Yugoslavia, has been a prominent conservative legal figure in Arizona. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump praised Brnovich as “a strong advocate for Freedom” who “will always put America First.”
Brnovich served two terms as Arizona’s Attorney General from 2015 to 2023. During his tenure, he was known for his tough stance on border security, support for voter ID laws, and frequent legal challenges against the federal government. Prior to that, he led Arizona’s Department of Gaming and worked as a federal prosecutor.
A graduate of Arizona State University and its law school, Brnovich also served in the U.S. Army National Guard and has been active in veterans’ issues. Fluent in Serbian, he has long maintained ties to the Balkan region and its diaspora communities in the United States.
The nomination is expected to be sent to the Senate for confirmation in the coming weeks.
