Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of U.S. President Donald Trump, used a visit to Bosnia’s Serb Republic on Monday to criticize the European Union as dysfunctional and in need of repair, while local leader Milorad Dodik portrayed the trip as evidence that Republika Srpska is strengthening its international position.

Speaking at a panel discussion in Banja Luka, Trump Jr. said he had repeatedly heard at international business gatherings that the EU was “a catastrophe” or “a bit of a mess” that needed fixing, comments that echoed broader criticism of Brussels from figures aligned with the Trump political camp. He also praised what he described as the work ethic in Republika Srpska, saying Americans could learn from the region.

Reuters reported that the event was hosted by Igor Dodik, the son of Milorad Dodik, the pro-Russian former president of Bosnia’s Serb Republic, and that the visit was widely interpreted as a show of support for Dodik’s camp. Regional media reports said Igor Dodik told the audience Trump Jr. had come at his personal invitation and that the aim was to help shape “a new vision of the future.”

Milorad Dodik later said on social media that Republika Srpska “builds friendships around the world,” strengthens its international standing and “achieves victories,” adding that meetings such as Monday’s panel help build understanding and cooperation.

The visit took place under heavy security. Regional outlets reported that streets in Banja Luka were blocked, police units were deployed across the city and a helicopter was in the air during Trump Jr.’s stay. Earlier in the day, Bosnian media had reported traffic restrictions and heightened police measures around Banja Luka and nearby Laktasi ahead of his arrival.

Trump Jr. was accompanied by Brad Parscale, who ran digital strategy for Donald Trump’s 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns, according to regional media.

The remarks come at a politically sensitive moment in the region and beyond. Reuters noted that the trip coincided with a visit by U.S. Vice President JD Vance to Hungary, where he criticized EU influence ahead of a tightly contested election, underscoring what appears to be a broader effort by the Trump administration to engage more directly with conservative leaders in Central and Eastern Europe.

The visit has also drawn criticism from opponents of Dodik. Bosnian and Serbian regional media reported that opposition figures in Republika Srpska described the event as a marketing exercise rather than institutional diplomacy and questioned who was financing it.

Reuters said the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo described Trump Jr.’s trip as personal, but his presence was nevertheless seen locally as politically significant because of Dodik’s efforts to rebuild relations with Washington after the lifting of earlier U.S. sanctions on him and some allies. Republika Srpska, one of the two entities created under Bosnia’s 1995 Dayton peace agreement, has long maintained close ties with Russia while periodically clashing with Western diplomats over Bosnia’s constitutional order.

The European Union remains Bosnia’s largest trade partner and main financial backer, making Trump Jr.’s comments particularly striking in a country whose future is still formally tied to European integration. His criticism of the bloc, combined with Dodik’s attempt to frame the visit as proof of growing international relevance, is likely to deepen debate over whether Republika Srpska is moving closer to Washington’s new conservative orbit while distancing itself rhetorically from Brussels. That interpretation is supported by the timing and messaging around the visit, though neither Trump Jr. nor Dodik announced any formal political or economic agreements.
