Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić visited the construction site of EXPO 2027 on Friday, highlighting ongoing development efforts as protests unfolded in central Belgrade.
“People have different dreams — some dream of tearing things down, others of building. I believe the majority of Serbian citizens want to build a better and more successful Serbia,” Vučić said in a video message from the site, accompanied by Finance Minister Siniša Mali.
Vučić praised the workers, noting that over 1,800 were on site, alongside hundreds of trucks and construction equipment. “EXPO is to my right, behind me is a residential complex — thousands of people are working hard to build our Serbia,” he added.
As citizens gathered for a major protest with students in the city center, Vučić struck a defiant tone. “I am convinced we will withstand all pressures and attacks today, preserve peace and stability, and continue to build and win in the future. Just as we raised Serbia from the ashes 13 years ago, we will elevate it to unimaginable heights… Serbia must not stop! Long live Serbia!” he declared.
The visit comes amid rising tensions, with critics accusing Vučić of stifling democratic freedoms. The EXPO 2027 project is a cornerstone of his administration’s push to boost infrastructure and economic growth.
