Telekom Serbia’s CEO, Vladimir Lučić, said on Tuesday that a group of hackers had stolen data from the company’s servers and attempted to extort Bitcoin payments, but stressed that users’ personal information remained secure and the company’s services were never disrupted.

Speaking to reporters in Bor, Lučić confirmed that the breach involved part of the user database for Telekom’s satellite television service. He described the hackers as an “amateurish group” and said authorities were working closely with Telekom to track down the perpetrators.

“This group took some factual data from our satellite TV users and tried to blackmail us for Bitcoin,” Lučić said. “We are in intensive cooperation with the police and the High-Tech Crime Department and are very close to catching those responsible.”

Telekom Serbia has faced ongoing cyberattacks aimed at disrupting its operations, Lučić added.
