Protests are underway in Novi Sad and other Serbian cities following clashes in front of the Serbian National Theatre (SNP) during a ceremony marking the 200th anniversary of the Matica Srpska cultural institution.

Organizers called on citizens to gather at Pozorišni Square, citing physical confrontations between supporters of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party and protesters. Several people reportedly sought medical attention.

The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad earlier instructed police to identify all participants involved in the incidents.

After assembling at the square, protesters marched toward the Police Administration building on Bulevar Kralja Petra I. Similar gatherings were reported in other cities.

The protests come amid growing tensions over political demonstrations and public gatherings in Serbia.
