NATO has reiterated its full support for the European Union-led dialogue aimed at normalizing relations between Serbia and Kosovo, emphasizing the strategic importance of the Western Balkans for the alliance.
Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Radmila Šekerinska, made the comments during a meeting with the EU Special Representative for the dialogue, Peter Sørensen, at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
“Through the KFOR mission, NATO continues to do everything militarily possible on the ground to protect peace, for the benefit of all people living in Kosovo. However, a lasting solution for regional stability is ultimately political,” Šekerinska said. “For that reason, NATO continues to fully support the EU-led dialogue to normalize relations between Belgrade and Pristina and the efforts of Special Representative Sørensen.”
Šekerinska highlighted that NATO-EU cooperation is strong and that ongoing coordination will be key to the progress of the dialogue. She added that member states have agreed to increase support for efforts to achieve normalization.
According to NATO, Sørensen also participated in a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, which included NATO partners contributing personnel to KFOR – the NATO mission operating in Kosovo.
The EU-led dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina aims to address longstanding political and security tensions in the region, laying the groundwork for durable stability. NATO views this political framework as essential for maintaining peace and preventing the escalation of conflicts.
With tensions in the Western Balkans occasionally spilling over into regional politics, NATO continues to focus on providing coordinated military and civilian support for KFOR, while backing European efforts to stabilize the region.
