Montenegro’s President Jakov Milatović said on Sunday that national interests must take precedence over political inflexibility as global uncertainty grows and divisions deepen among key Western allies.

“In times of heightened global instability, state interests come first. There is no room for political stubbornness,” Milatović said in a post on social media platform X.

He said Montenegro is strongest when it treats its social and ethnic diversity as an asset rather than a source of division, urging political actors to prioritise cohesion and institutional stability.

Milatović warned that increasing divergence between the positions of Montenegro’s main strategic partners, the United States and the European Union, makes it essential for the country to focus on factors within its control, including social unity, strong institutions and public trust.

Montenegro, a NATO member and candidate for European Union membership, has faced prolonged political fragmentation and institutional gridlock in recent years.

Milatović did not refer to specific political disputes but stressed that maintaining internal stability is critical as geopolitical tensions intensify globally.
