The Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia, Hristijan Mickoski, called for national unity in the fight against corruption, emphasizing that the latest tragedy that shook Macedonia is the result of deeply rooted systemic failures and abuses. In an emotional address, he sent a message for bold reforms and accountability.

“This is not an inter-party battle between VMRO-DPMNE, SDSM, or any other party. This is a battle of the honest against the corrupt in all parties and institutions,” Mickoski declared, stressing that the fight against corruption should be a priority above political differences.

Call for accountability and reforms

Mickoski announced that he would demand a thorough investigation into all circumstances that led to the tragedy, promising that concrete measures would be taken regardless of the political affiliation of those responsible.

“All aspects of control will be examined, and the problems burdening society will be identified,” he said. “There will be bold steps and decisions, perhaps even ones the public is not used to. But changes begin with ourselves.”

According to him, the fight against corruption is not just a political issue but a moral duty to future generations.

“This is a battle against a monster that is devouring the country’s future and taking victims with it. It is taking our loved ones. And victory over it is our duty.”

In his address, Mickoski expressed gratitude to the medical staff and everyone who participated in the rescue efforts, as well as to neighboring countries for their support.

“I want to express great gratitude to the doctors and all the medical personnel in the country who selflessly engaged in providing assistance to the injured,” he said.

Emotional message to citizens

Visibly shaken, the opposition leader shared his grief with the families of the victims, emphasizing that this pain is felt by every citizen of Macedonia.

“Today, I am broken. There is no person in Macedonia who is not broken and whose spirit is not destroyed after what happened. I have no words to ease the sorrow and pain of the families and all the citizens because this is my pain as well,” Mickoski declared.

“May God help the families of the deceased and the injured, and all the citizens of Macedonia. May He give us all comfort and peace in the days ahead. And may He protect Macedonia! Macedonia must be stronger than the corrupt system.”

In a fire that engulfed the “Puls” nightclub in Kočani early Sunday morning, at least 60 young people lost their lives, while over 150 were injured. Poor safety standards at the venue are believed to be the cause of this tragedy, while the owners’ corrupt ties with the authorities allowed the venue to obtain a working license.
