“We must now do everything to advance enlargement in the Western Balkans,” Lopatka said in a statement.
Negotiations between Montenegro and the European Union (EU) have advanced far and for the first time since Croatia’s accession in 2013, the Union could be expanded and strengthened again, said the European Parliament rapporteur for Montenegro on behalf of the European People’s Party (EPP), Reinhold Lopatka.
On the sidelines of the EPP congress, Lopatka advocated for the admission of new members to the EU.
“We must now do everything to advance enlargement in the Western Balkans,” Lopatka said in a statement.
He said that, as the EPP’s chief rapporteur in the European Parliament for Montenegro, he is convinced that the EU can accept Montenegro in this mandate and thus once again become a Union with 28 member states.
“Accession negotiations with Montenegro are well advanced. For the first time since Croatia’s accession in 2013, we could expand the EU again and thereby strengthen it. It is high time to move from words to deeds,” said Lopatka.
