A speleological expedition has uncovered a previously unexplored vertical shaft around 70 metres deep inside the “Sterra e Kujunxhiut” cave in Albania’s Llogara National Park.
The nearly vertical cave ends in a large accumulation of rocks that researchers believe may have sealed off the continuation of the underground gallery, leaving open the possibility of further hidden chambers.
At the bottom of the shaft, the expedition found a large number of animal bones, including remains believed to belong to wild boars, deer, wolves, foxes and other species of wildlife. Researchers say the discovery offers valuable insights into the area’s natural history and ecosystem.
The team plans further exploration to determine whether the cave extends beyond the rock blockage and to document its geological and environmental significance.
The discovery highlights the largely unexplored subterranean landscape of Llogara National Park, one of Albania’s most important protected areas, renowned for its dramatic mountain scenery and rich biodiversity.
