Long queues and hours-long delays were reported at several of Serbia’s border crossings on Friday, causing major disruptions for thousands of travellers amid peak holiday traffic, Serbia’s Auto-Moto Association (AMSS) said.
The longest delays were at Gradina on the border with Bulgaria and Batrovci on the border with Croatia, where wait times stretched to up to 120 minutes for passenger vehicles exiting the country.
Congestion was also reported at Horgoš, Horgoš 2, Strezimirovci, Preševo and Prohor Pčinjski crossings, with outbound traffic experiencing delays of around 60 minutes. Entry into the country was generally smoother, with significantly shorter wait times.
At the Šimanovci toll station, located near the Belgrade-Zagreb highway, vehicles were delayed for about 30 minutes, while similar conditions were observed at Šid and Sremska Rača.
The Serbian Roads Authority and Border Police confirmed the figures as of 17:15 local time, advising drivers to be patient and plan for extended travel times.
Serbia, a key transit country for travellers heading from Western and Central Europe to Greece, Turkey, and other summer destinations, sees increased traffic at its borders during peak vacation season.
Authorities recommended checking real-time traffic updates before travel, especially over weekends when congestion typically intensifies.
