A Greek court has sentenced three Turkish nationals to prison terms ranging from six to 11 years over a 2025 shooting incident targeting an officer of Greece’s National Intelligence Service, judicial sources said.
A mixed jury court in the northern city of Edessa found the main defendant, aged 50, guilty of attempted murder and illegal possession and use of a firearm, handing him an 11-year sentence. A 24-year-old accomplice was sentenced to nine years, while a 44-year-old received six years for aiding and abetting the attack.
The court did not recognize any mitigating circumstances, and all three defendants were returned to prison, where they had been held since their arrest.
The incident occurred on May 27, 2025, during an intelligence operation in Tagarades, near Thessaloniki, targeting suspected Turkish organized crime networks. According to the indictment, the suspects were under surveillance when their vehicle stopped at a gas station, where the main आरोपी exited and opened fire at a vehicle carrying an intelligence officer. No injuries were reported.
Authorities arrested the main suspect days later in a mountainous area near the Rhodope region as he allegedly attempted to flee to Bulgaria. He told the court he acted out of fear, believing he was under threat, and apologized.
The two other defendants were detained shortly after the shooting in Svilengrad, Bulgaria, near the Turkish border, and later extradited to Greece. They denied involvement in the attack.
Statements from intelligence personnel involved in the operation were read in court, and the verdict was delivered late on Tuesday.
