Greek authorities rescued 108 migrants from a wooden boat on Sunday about 41 nautical miles south of Gavdos, Greece’s southernmost island, the Hellenic Coast Guard said.
The migrants were first spotted by a merchant vessel sailing under the Liberian flag, which took them aboard before transferring them to Greek coast guard vessels, officials said. They were later brought safely to the port of Paleochora on the island of Crete.
Authorities said the rescued migrants were undergoing medical checks and humanitarian assessments. No injuries were reported.
Greece, a frontline European Union state, has been a key entry point for migrants and asylum seekers travelling from the Middle East, Africa and Asia toward Europe, with authorities regularly carrying out rescue operations in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean seas.
