Greece has launched a new digital system to accelerate passport application processing, allowing government agencies to exchange applicants’ documents electronically and reducing bureaucracy, the Ministry of Citizen Protection said.
The platform, which became operational on Dec. 31, enables secure digital transfers between passport offices nationwide and the Hellenic Police’s Directorate of Passports and Security Documents in Athens, which approves all passports issued by the state.
Officials said the system is expected to cut processing times, reduce errors that can lead to rejected applications, and lower costs previously incurred for courier and postal services used to transfer paper documents.
Police officers can now retrieve required information directly from other government databases, meaning applicants no longer need to submit certain supporting documents in person, the ministry said.
The government plans to extend the platform later this year to Greek consulates and embassies abroad.
Greece’s passport ranked sixth globally in the 2025 Henley Passport Index, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 186 destinations, underscoring the country’s strong international mobility.
