Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is reportedly seeking to strengthen ties with Donald Trump’s political camp, as Athens positions itself as one of Washington’s closest allies in Europe amid growing tensions between the former US president and several EU leaders.

According to reports, US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle has been encouraging Trump to visit Greece during celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, with discussions even including the possibility of a speech at the Acropolis in Athens.

While the timing of such a visit has not been confirmed, Guilfoyle publicly acknowledged this week that Trump is expected to visit Greece.

The Trump camp has increasingly praised Greece and Mitsotakis in recent months, with Trump reportedly describing the country as “great” and calling the Greek prime minister “a great man.”

For the Greek government, closer ties with Washington are seen as strategically important, particularly in light of tensions with Türkiye and concerns over regional security in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Athens views the United States, which maintains a major naval presence on the island of Crete, as its primary security guarantor against potential threats from Ankara.

Greek authorities have also accelerated economic cooperation with the United States, signing major energy agreements and encouraging American investment in ports and infrastructure.

One of the first major agreements after Guilfoyle’s arrival involved a deal with ExxonMobil to begin offshore drilling operations in Greece, the country’s first such project in more than four decades.

Greece also became the first EU country to participate in Washington’s efforts to replace Russian gas supplies with American liquefied natural gas destined for Ukraine.

Guilfoyle also sparked controversy by criticizing Chinese ownership of the port of Piraeus, describing it as “unfortunate” and suggesting the arrangement could eventually change.

Shortly afterward, the Greek government accelerated plans for a new US-backed port project near Athens, a move criticized by the opposition as politically motivated and economically questionable.

In public appearances and interviews, Guilfoyle has openly emphasized her intention to aggressively promote American economic and strategic interests in Greece and the wider region.

She also highlighted her close relationship with Mitsotakis and senior Greek ministers, saying she communicates regularly with top government officials.

At the same time, Greece’s ruling conservative New Democracy party has increasingly adopted themes associated with the MAGA movement, including tougher rhetoric on migration, emphasis on Christianity and national identity, and criticism of “woke” politics.

Several senior Greek officials have publicly praised Trump’s policies and political style.

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis repeatedly expressed admiration for Trump, while Migration Minister Thanos Plevris argued that American voters supported Trump because of concerns over illegal migration and opposition to progressive agendas.

Mitsotakis himself has attempted to distance his government from perceptions that it was previously too close to former US Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic camp.

Greek opposition parties have accused the government of displaying what they described as “servile obedience” toward Trump and his political allies.

Meanwhile, the annual Delphi Economic Forum has increasingly become a gathering place for prominent MAGA-linked figures and conservative American strategists.

Participants this year included US Ambassador to the EU Andrew Puzder, Heritage Foundation representatives, Project 2025 architect Paul Dans and several pro-Trump political operatives.

Some of the participants openly framed Greece as part of a broader geopolitical struggle between the United States and China.

Analysts say the growing ideological alignment between Athens and the MAGA movement reflects not only security concerns and economic interests, but also the broader shift of parts of Europe’s conservative right toward Trump-style politics.

If Trump ultimately visits Greece this summer, the trip could become one of the clearest symbols yet of the rapidly evolving political relationship between Athens and the MAGA movement.
