Farmer road blockades in parts of northern Greece eased on Friday, reopening key highway routes in Western Macedonia, though several border crossings with Bulgaria and North Macedonia remained closed, authorities said.
The blockade at Siatista on the Egnatia highway ended at around 5:30 p.m. local time, along with a protest at the Filota junction, allowing traffic to resume on routes linking Florina, Kozani and Edessa in both directions.
The Promachonas border checkpoint with Bulgaria also reopened late in the afternoon. However, blockades continued at the Exochi crossing on the Bulgarian border and at Evzoni and Niki on the border with North Macedonia.
In the Nevrokopi area of the Drama region, farmers and livestock breeders have blocked trucks and commercial vehicles since Thursday morning. The blockade, located about 500 metres from the Exochi customs post, is scheduled to end at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Passenger cars and tourist buses are being diverted via secondary roads.
Farmers also lifted a blockade at the Nea Malgara toll station on the Thessaloniki–Athens national highway, reopening both lanes shortly after 6:30 p.m., despite earlier plans for a 48-hour closure that began on Thursday.
Greek farmers have staged rolling protests in recent weeks, demanding support measures to offset rising production costs and pressure on incomes.
