The European Union on Wednesday expressed deep concern over recent political turmoil in Serbia, including disruptions in parliamentary proceedings and increasing pressure on civil society organizations.

“We are very concerned by the disruptions of parliamentary work and the violence in the Parliament,” an EU spokesperson said in a statement. “The Parliament must be the place for democratic debate in the interest of all citizens and must fully play its role.”

The statement comes amid heightened tensions in Belgrade, where political clashes have escalated in recent weeks. Opposition parties have accused the government of stifling debate, while authorities say they are maintaining order.

Brussels also warned against increasing pressure on civil society, describing it as a key pillar of democracy. “The recent developments in Serbia targeting civil society organisations are also very worrying. Civil society plays a vital role in the development of a democratic and pluralistic society,” the EU statement said.

The bloc has repeatedly urged Serbian authorities to ease tensions by fostering an inclusive dialogue involving political actors, institutions, and civil society members. “We have been consistently calling for de-escalation of tensions, by establishing conditions for an inclusive dialogue to address reforms necessary for Serbia’s EU future,” the spokesperson added.

Serbia, which aspires to join the EU, has faced growing criticism over democratic backsliding, media freedom concerns, and institutional transparency. While President Aleksandar Vučić has pledged reforms, critics say progress remains slow.

The EU has emphasized that democratic standards and rule of law remain core requirements for Serbia’s accession process. / BV
