Turkish President said on Wednesday that Türkiye was taking all necessary measures to protect its borders and airspace after a ballistic munition fired from Iran was intercepted by NATO air and missile defence units in the Eastern Mediterranean.

“Türkiye is leaving nothing to chance when it comes to the security of its borders and airspace,” Erdoğan said, adding that Ankara was acting in close coordination with its NATO allies and would intervene immediately when required.

“Our determination and capacity to ensure the security of our country and our nation are at the highest level,” he said.

Erdoğan also said Ankara had issued its “strongest warnings” to prevent similar incidents from occurring again, referring to the missile incident earlier on Wednesday.

Turkey’s Defence Ministry said the projectile, launched from Iran and detected after passing through Iraqi and Syrian airspace, was intercepted and neutralised by NATO air and missile defence systems deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean.

In a statement posted on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, the ministry said air defence units engaged the threat in time and rendered it ineffective. No casualties were reported.
