U.S. Department of Justice documents released on Thursday include an email from former Council of Europe Secretary-General Thorbjørn Jagland to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following Jagland’s 2012 visit to Albania.
The email, sent on May 25, 2012, a day after Jagland’s official trip to Tirana, states: “I was in Tirana, extraordinary girls,” according to DOJ records. Jagland’s visit included meetings with then-Foreign Minister Edmond Haxhinasto, Prime Minister Sali Berisha, and President Bamir Topi, as part of the Council of Europe’s institutional engagement in Albania.
Jagland, who also served as Norway’s prime minister and foreign minister, was Secretary-General of the pan-European institution overseeing democracy, human rights, and the rule of law across 47 member states.
The released email does not reference any private meetings or off-agenda activities, and there is currently no public evidence linking it to any specific wrongdoing beyond the single communication.
The documents are part of over three million pages released in ongoing U.S. investigations into Epstein’s criminal network.
