Part of the anti-government demonstrators clashed with police in central Belgrade on Saturday evening after a large student-led protest at Slavija Square, escalating tensions in Serbia amid months of political unrest and demonstrations against President Aleksandar Vučić’s government.

Thousands of protesters gathered earlier at Slavija Square in one of the latest rallies organised by student groups demanding political accountability and institutional reforms.

Following the rally, groups of demonstrators moved toward the Serbian parliament and nearby streets, where confrontations with police broke out.

Police units formed cordons around the parliament building and cleared the area in front of the National Assembly after incidents between protesters and security forces.

According to reporters on the ground, the situation later became calmer around the parliament, although tensions remained high in other parts of the city.

In Pioneer Park, near the Serbian Presidency building, supporters of the government gathered separately, while nationalist songs including “Vrati se vojvodo” could be heard from loudspeakers.

One group gathered near Terazije reportedly included football supporters linked to Partizan Belgrade.

Images from the scene showed riot police moving against demonstrators as protesters shouted anti-government slogans.

The latest unrest comes amid a wider wave of student-led demonstrations that have become one of the biggest political challenges for Vučić in recent years.

The protests were initially triggered by demands linked to governance, corruption and institutional transparency, but have gradually evolved into broader anti-government mobilisations.

Serbian authorities have repeatedly accused opposition groups and foreign actors of attempting to destabilise the country, while protesters insist the demonstrations are driven by domestic frustrations over democratic backsliding and concentration of power.

No official information about arrests or injuries was immediately released.
