Bulgarian political figures have expressed varied reactions following the recent meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.

Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov took to social media to voice his support, stating, “Ukraine, be brave, be strong. We stand by you.” Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev echoed this sentiment, asserting, “We are all by your side.”

Calls for Unified European Response

Boyko Borissov, leader of the GERB part,  emphasized the need for European unity, warning that any attempt to divide Europe weakens the continent. He advocated for an immediate summit between the U.S., EU countries, and allies to discuss the way forward.

The Continue the Change party declared full support for President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people, recognizing their efforts in defending national interests and promoting peace across Europe. Atanas Atanasov, leader of Democrats for Strong Bulgaria, called for swift consolidation among EU leaders to provide robust support for Ukraine, questioning Bulgaria’s stance in the ongoing conflict.

Divergent Views on Peace Efforts

The Yes, Bulgaria! movement emphasized directing all efforts toward establishing a just and lasting peace, cautioning against allowing Bulgaria to fall under Russian influence. In contrast, the Vazrazhdane party expressed support for President Trump’s pursuit of global peace, criticizing President Zelensky’s actions as serving liberal elites at the expense of the Ukrainian people.

Delyan Peevski, leader of MRF-New Beginning, underscored the global need for peace and the responsibility of nation-states to protect their citizens. He criticized the export of democracy as a facade for oligarchic interests, advocating for strong national institutions to ensure Bulgaria’s prosperity.

MEP Elena Yoncheva highlighted the necessity of restoring dialogue, suggesting that Europe’s approach to information warfare has hindered democratic discourse. She urged Bulgaria to align with peace efforts, noting a shifting global landscape. Similarly, ABV leader Rumen Petkov called for a clear governmental stance favoring diplomatic resolutions, criticizing European institutions for lacking defense mechanisms under current leadership.

Focus on Halting the Conflict

Slavi Trifonov, leader of There Is Such a People (TISP), stressed the urgency of ending the war in Ukraine, condemning hypocritical support that doesn’t translate into tangible assistance. He praised President Rumen Radev’s consistent and pragmatic position on the issue.

Radostin Vasilev, leader of Morality, Unity, Honour (MECh), predicted that the war in Ukraine would cease, cautioning that Bulgaria might find itself in a disadvantageous position due to the actions of the ruling class. Identifying as a supporter of President Trump, Vasilev reflected on his earlier prediction of Trump’s electoral victory.
