Bajram Begaj on Friday praised ethnic Albanians in North Macedonia as a key factor in the country’s political stability and its Euro-Atlantic future, during an official visit to Skopje.

Speaking alongside his host, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, Begaj described Albanians in North Macedonia as “constructive, democratic and state-building,” adding that the “Albanian factor remains crucial for governance, institutional stability and the country’s Euro-Atlantic advancement.”

Begaj said Albania considers the 2001 Ohrid Framework Agreement a historic achievement that underpins interethnic relations in North Macedonia. He stressed the importance of fully implementing provisions related to equitable representation and the use of the Albanian language, calling them essential for social cohesion and the country’s European perspective.

“Balanced and inclusive decision-making remains the best solution and the foundation of trust between communities,” Begaj said.

Siljanovska-Davkova said the two neighbours enjoy excellent and friendly relations and have no open disputes.

“As long as we have no open issues, we have a broad basis for cooperation,” she said, highlighting the need for improved infrastructure links and deeper economic ties.

Both presidents reaffirmed their commitment to European Union membership, describing integration as a strategic goal for the Western Balkans.

Siljanovska-Davkova said accession depends on reforms, particularly in the rule of law, the fight against corruption and the strengthening of democratic institutions. She warned against what she called the “bilateralisation” of the EU enlargement process, saying that placing identity and historical issues on the agenda could complicate accession efforts.

Begaj said Albania aims to close EU negotiating chapters by 2027 and become a member by 2030, adding that regional Euro-Atlantic integration remains a shared priority.

The two leaders also discussed cooperation within NATO and regional initiatives, as well as joint infrastructure and energy projects, including the pan-European Corridor VIII linking the Adriatic and Black seas.

Begaj said the corridor represents not only a transport route but also an energy and security link of strategic importance for Europe.

The visit included a one-on-one meeting between the presidents followed by plenary talks between the two delegations, focusing on bilateral ties, EU aspirations and regional security.
