Albania has lifted restrictions on TikTok and restored full access to the video-sharing platform after nearly a year of suspension, the government said Wednesday.
The Council of Ministers approved the decision to unblock the app, which had been inaccessible since March 13, 2025, following a fatal stabbing of a 14-year-old boy that authorities said stemmed from a dispute that began on the platform.
Under the decision, the National Authority for Cyber Security (AKSK), in cooperation with relevant regulators, has been instructed to take the necessary steps to remove technical measures that blocked access to TikTok across the country, while ensuring compliance with data protection laws.
Prime Minister Edi Rama previously said the suspension was temporary and that access would be restored once an agreement was reached with the Chinese-owned company behind TikTok to introduce stronger content filters aimed at reducing potential harm to children’s mental and emotional wellbeing.
The government formally repealed a March 6, 2025 cabinet decision that had imposed temporary restrictions on the platform, citing public safety and social concerns in the digital environment.
Several ministries, including education, justice, interior, health and infrastructure, along with sector regulators and the National Agency for the Information Society, have been tasked with overseeing the implementation of the decision, the government said.
