Awareness and use of artificial intelligence (AI) are rising sharply in Croatia, with ChatGPT the most widely used platform, according to a national survey presented on Tuesday.
The study, conducted by Algebra Bernays University and research agency Prizma on a sample of 2,500 citizens, found that all respondents had heard of AI, up from 90% in 2023. AI use nearly doubled to 47% from 24% last year, while use of specific AI tools climbed to 54% from 35%.
Data science expert Robert Kopal said that, for the first time, citizens see AI risks as greater than its opportunities. Most respondents (74%) use AI to access hard-to-find information, followed by translation and text generation.
The survey showed fewer negative perceptions of AI and more positive attitudes, though knowledge of EU AI rules remains low at 3%. Many still fear job losses, with only 13% expecting AI to create new employment.
Presenters welcomed government plans to develop a national AI action plan.
