Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama on Sunday signalled upcoming changes in both his government and ruling Socialist Party, following a sweeping victory in the May 11 parliamentary elections that secured him a fourth consecutive mandate.

In a 45-minute address to newly elected lawmakers and party candidates, Rama said the Socialists must “do some things differently” as they prepare to launch their new term.

“We must start with ourselves and rethink some of the things that need to change,” Rama told the group, adding that reshuffles in both the party leadership and the government were on the horizon.

Rama, who has led Albania since 2013, said the next four years would require greater alignment within the party and with the country’s European partners.

“We need full understanding among ourselves and with our European family, because we are going to use the power of this fourth mandate,” he said, without giving specifics on potential changes or timelines.

The Socialist Party won a comfortable majority in the May 11 vote, consolidating its control amid a fragmented opposition. Rama’s victory positions him to press forward with his agenda, including long-delayed reforms linked to Albania’s EU accession process.
