Bulgaria’s parliament is set to vote on a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Zhelyazkov’s government, submitted by the nationalist party “Vazrazhdane” over what it called a failure in foreign policy. The motion has gained support from the MEP and “Velichie” parties.
Debates on the motion lasted nearly four hours on Wednesday, focusing on Bulgaria’s stance on the war in Ukraine and the government’s response to the death of Captain Marin Marinov in Gaza. Lawmakers from the reformist coalition PP-DB walked out of the chamber in protest and reaffirmed their opposition to the motion.
Former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov dismissed speculation about the government’s stability, saying, “Whether I am calm about the government is irrelevant.”
The ruling coalition, which includes GERB-SDS, ITN, BSP-OL, DPS, and DPS-New Beginning, has rallied behind the government. The motion is expected to fail, with support likely only from “Vazrazhdane,” MEP, and “Velichie.”
Under parliamentary rules, the vote must take place at least 24 hours after debates conclude. Lawmakers will cast their votes at 13:45 local time.
