A postman from Čapljina has been arrested at the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia after allegedly failing to deliver dozens of pension payments and leaving the country.
The man, identified by police through the initials S.J. and born in 1995, was reported missing by his mother on September 7. She said she last saw him two days earlier, when he left for Mostar with friends.
Investigators established that he had subsequently left Bosnia and Herzegovina. Media reports said he travelled through Sarajevo and Turkey and had purchased a ticket to Bangkok, although it remains unclear whether he reached Thailand.
Initial reports referred to about a dozen undelivered pensions, while other media said between 50 and 60 payments could be involved. The total amount of money remains unknown.
The postal service assured pensioners that they would receive their payments and said it was taking measures to protect beneficiaries.
The case attracted widespread attention and inspired satirical fundraising campaigns and a Facebook support group for the “Bangkok postman”.
The suspect was detained on September 16 and remains in custody. Authorities have not disclosed what happened to the missing pension money.
