A major fire swept through a recycling plant in the Greek industrial town of Aspropyrgos on Wednesday, injuring 11 people, including three who remain in critical condition, authorities said.
The blaze engulfed the factory, sending thick black smoke over the surrounding area and prompting emergency evacuation alerts for nearby residents.
Firefighters rescued one injured worker from the site, while another managed to escape on his own before emergency crews arrived.
Doctors at Triasio Hospital treated five victims for burn injuries. Two people with severe burns were intubated and remain in critical condition, while three others suffered minor burns. A fourth patient was later discharged.
Five additional people were taken to Attikon Hospital after suffering respiratory problems caused by smoke inhalation. One of them was intubated before being transferred to the KAT General Hospital for specialized treatment.
The fire completely destroyed the recycling facility, according to local media and fire officials. Authorities said a truck carrying a propane tank was located inside the complex, raising concerns about a possible explosion as firefighters battled the flames.
Greece’s emergency warning system issued a 112 alert urging residents in the affected area to evacuate immediately.
More than 75 firefighters, supported by 20 fire engines, water tankers and a firefighting helicopter, were deployed to contain the blaze.
The Fire Service’s arson investigation unit has launched an inquiry into the cause of the fire.
There was no immediate indication of what triggered the incident.
