TIRANA, July 7 (BV) – Hundreds of protesters gathered in central Tirana on Tuesday for the 38th consecutive day of anti-government demonstrations, marching from Skanderbeg Square to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The protest movement began as opposition to a planned tourism development on Sazan Island but has since broadened into a wider campaign against the government.
Demonstrators carried banners and used loudspeakers to call for Prime Minister Edi Rama’s resignation and the establishment of a technical government.
Among the slogans heard during the march were “Rama resign” and “Rama in prison, Berisha in prison,” reflecting criticism directed at both the governing Socialist Party and the opposition led by former Prime Minister Sali Berisha.
The protesters accuse the government of corruption and mismanagement and argue that only an interim administration can ensure free and fair elections.
No major incidents or clashes with police were reported during Tuesday’s demonstration.
The daily rallies have become one of Albania’s longest-running protest movements in recent years, maintaining pressure on the government despite no indication from Rama that he intends to step down.
