Cyprus faces an uncertain tourism outlook this year due to the impact of the Middle East crisis, though officials say the sector could remain resilient if targeted measures are implemented.

Deputy Tourism Minister Costas Koumis said the situation “is not easy” and would require close monitoring and coordinated action across the industry, including weekly assessments and sector-wide responses.

“If these are implemented, we can be cautiously optimistic,” Koumis told journalists in London, where he held meetings with key tourism partners.

The discussions are part of a broader effort by Cypriot authorities to assess the trajectory of the 2026 tourism season and introduce measures to support demand in core markets.

Koumis acknowledged that regional instability has affected travel sentiment across the Eastern Mediterranean, impacting Cyprus alongside other destinations. However, he said early indicators — particularly from the British market — suggest that losses may be smaller than initially expected.

He pointed to May bookings as a key test, noting that despite recent negative signals, the month had not been “lost” for tourism.

Cyprus relies heavily on visitors from the United Kingdom, one of its largest source markets, making trends in British demand a critical factor for the overall season.

Koumis said last year’s tourism performance, which set a record for arrivals and revenues, provides a strong baseline, and current data suggest Cyprus could maintain a solid market position despite ongoing uncertainty.

Industry stakeholders say the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the island can offset potential declines through targeted promotion and flexible travel offerings.
