Croatia’s meteorological authorities issued a fresh warning on Monday for strong winds and hazardous conditions across large parts of the country, days after severe storms caused damage and disruption.

The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service said a yellow alert – indicating potentially dangerous weather – was in force nationwide, particularly along the Adriatic coast and mountainous regions, where strong northeasterly “bura” winds are expected.

Wind gusts could reach between 65 and 110 kilometres per hour in exposed areas such as the Velebit Channel, with slightly lower but still strong gusts forecast across coastal regions, including Dalmatia and Kvarner.

Authorities warned that the conditions could disrupt transport, including ferry services, and pose risks from falling branches and airborne debris. Small vessels were advised to avoid sailing due to rough seas and strong winds.

The warning follows a period of extreme weather across the region. In recent days, storms with winds exceeding 120 km/h hit parts of Croatia, including the capital Zagreb, damaging infrastructure, uprooting trees, and injuring several people.

Across the western Balkans, severe weather has already led to power outages, road closures, and school disruptions, highlighting the impact of volatile weather patterns in the region.

Meteorologists said the current instability is linked to pressure differences over southeastern Europe, which are driving strong winds and rapidly changing conditions.

Officials urged residents to remain cautious, monitor forecasts, and limit outdoor activities during peak wind periods.
