The demolition of the Vjesnik tower in Zagreb has been postponed after a last-minute appeal delayed the signing of a contract, local media reported on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Construction had planned to sign a contract with EURCO, a construction firm from Vinkovci, to carry out the demolition. However, Zagreb-based company V.D.M. Promet lodged an appeal against the tender decision on the final day of the deadline, according to Jutarnji List.
The appeal has been submitted to the State Commission for the Control of Public Procurement, complicating the process and almost certainly delaying the demolition. V.D.M. Promet, owned by Domagoj Mandić, is involved in several construction and demolition projects in the city, including a large residential building on Ozaljska Street.
The Vjesnik tower, badly damaged in a major fire on Nov. 17, 2025, was scheduled for demolition and project completion within 90 days under the original tender. The first phase, including the opening of an underpass on Slavonska Avenue, was expected within 30 days of signing the contract.
The tender process attracted 18 bids from 34 companies invited by the Ministry on the recommendation of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce. EURCO’s bid, valued at €4.2 million excluding VAT, scored the highest. The lowest bid was €1.8 million, compared with the project’s estimated cost of €5 million.
The reasons for the appeal were not immediately clear, and no new timeline for the demolition has been provided.
