Greece will participate as an observer in a Board of Peace meeting on Gaza, convened by U.S. President Donald Trump on February 19 in Washington, the Greek government said on Monday.
Deputy Foreign Minister Haris Theoharis will represent Greece at the session, which brings together international actors to discuss stabilization and reconstruction in Gaza.
Greece has adopted a cautious approach to the initiative, with Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis indicating that Athens will align with the European Union’s position rather than immediately commit to full participation.
A senior government source described Theoharis, whose responsibilities include economic diplomacy and international outreach, as “the most competent official for issues related to Gaza’s reconstruction,” adding that several EU countries will also attend as observers without senior-level representation.
Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis confirmed Greece’s participation, stating: “Our country will participate in the meeting in Washington as an observer on Thursday.”
He said Greece has expressed its intention to contribute both to stabilization efforts and the reconstruction of Gaza, noting that “it is significant that Greece is among the few countries accepted by both Israel and the Palestinian Authority, as well as the wider Arab world.”
Speaking in Parliament on January 26, Theoharis highlighted Greece’s role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and cited Resolution 2803 on ending the Gaza conflict. He emphasized that Greece has supported and worked to implement a 20-point peace plan “with all its forces.”
The meeting in Washington comes amid broader international efforts to stabilize Gaza and support humanitarian and reconstruction initiatives.
